'My sister's reaction to her gender reveal made me feel sick - she's terrible'

Holding a gender reveal party can be a fun way for you and your loved ones to find out your gender.

Choosing to find out your child's gender before they're born is entirely up to you, as is how you decide to find out. Some will let the doctor tell them during their ultrasound appointment, while others want the result sealed away in an envelope so that they can hold a party where they find out in front of their loved ones.

We can't choose whether we have a boy or a girl, but some parents do have a preference for the gender they hope they're going to have. It's, therefore, not uncommon for some people to be upset when they find out they're having a girl when they want a boy, for example. It doesn't necessarily mean the parent will love their child any less, but it can be an emotional shock to the system at first - especially when you're and already feeling hormonal fluctuations.

One woman, however, has slammed her sister as for the way she reacted when she found out the gender of her impending arrival. In fact, the woman was so horrified by what happened she stormed out of her sibling's party.

In a post on Reddit, the 37-year-old woman said she recently attended her sister's gender reveal party and was confused when she arrived as the room was decorated in "so much pink", which looked as though her sister already knew she was having a baby girl.

When it came to the reveal, it was confirmed that the mum-to-be was actually going to be having a boy - and she became "hysterical". She was "furious" and said she was being "punished" by not having a little girl, which left her sister seething.

The woman explained that she has "no living children" herself despite being pregnant four times, as she sadly endured three miscarriages and one stillborn baby. So hearing her sister claim she was "upset" at the news she was having a boy when she'd still be welcoming a healthy baby made her "sick", and she eventually left the party.

She wrote: "She got so hysterical and furious and she cursed and screamed that she wanted a girl, she was supposed to be having a girl and who the f**k was punishing her this way. Her husband looked equally upset by the reveal. I heard him say it was all bulls**t and what a waste. My sister's temper tantrum saddened me and honestly sickened me as someone who would do anything for a child to raise. So we quietly left. But it was noticed."

The woman's departure was noticed by her sister, who later confronted her to ask why she'd left without "comforting" her. When she explained how difficult it had been for her to listen to her sister's outburst, she was called a "terrible sister", and even their parents told her she should have been there for her sibling.

Commenters on the post were firmly on the woman's side, with many saying her sister's reaction made her seem "entitled". While many said her initial disappointment was valid, they also argued the mum-to-be shouldn't have "thrown a tantrum" or taken it out on her grieving sister.

One person said: "You lost every child you got pregnant with, and here your sister should be glad she's going to be having a healthy baby. I would have left after that, too, regardless, because who reacts like that to their baby's gender reveal? She shouldn't have put all her eggs in a basket, thinking it was a girl."

Another added: "Being upset because you expected a different outcome is one thing. For you and your husband to throw a tantrum and ruin the vibe of the party is another thing. I don't care what anyone says. I think it's sick and selfish. The way people try and normalise people ruining their own gender reveals over not having the gender they wanted."
